Description

View in the Valle dei Templi (Valley of the Temples) near Agrigento, Sicily. The view shows the tomb of Theron, the temple of Concordia, and the Temple of Juno Lacinia.

According to the inscription below the image “Peint à Gouache par Jac. Ph. Hackert 1782 Gravé par François Morel” the engraving is after a 1782 gouache by Philipp Hackert (1737 - 1807).

The print is dedicated to Count Andrey Kirilovich Razumovsky (1752-1836), Russian diplomat at patron of the arts (in 1806 he commissioned three string quartets from Beethoven).

François Morel or Francesco Morelli (ca. 1768 – ca. 1840) was a French-Italian painter and engraver. He was active in Naples and known as a painter or engraver of Pompeian subjects. He was born in the Franche-Comté, and then traveled to Rome, where was a pupil of Francesco Volpato. He completed a series of engravings depicting the so-called Villa of Horace in Licenza with Hackert and Luigi Sabatelli.

Engraving, in very good condition.
