Description

Splendid view of the Campano Amphitheater or Capuano Amphitheater - of Roman times - located in the city of Santa Maria Capua Vetere – the ancient Capua. Second in size only to the Colosseum of Rome, for which it probably served as a model, it was, in all likelihood, the first amphitheater in the Roman world to be built.

The work is engraved by Vincenzo Aloja - under the direction of Georg Abraham Hackert, who also took care of the printing. It is based on an original painting by his brother Jacob Philipp Hackert, who was the court painter of Ferdinand IV, King of the Two Sicilies.

Etching, printed on contemporary laid paper, with margins, in excellent condition.

Very rare.
