Billmark. Stockholm, J. C. Hedbom, 1852, published in Stockholm.
The lithographs depict views of landscapes and cityscapes that Billmark encountered on his journey from Stockholm to Naples.
Billmark, Swedish painter and lithographer, was initially a student of engraver Forsell. Important to his artistic career as a landscape painter were trips to Dalarna County, St. Petersburg, and Paris, where he moved and studied with the engraver Deroy. From 1828 to 1830, while in Paris, he published 100 lithographic landscape studies. He was a member of the Stockholm Academy and in the Swedish Museum, today are exposed many of his views of the city between drawings and sketches. He received the decoration of the Wasa order.
Certainly among the works of greatest interest was the publication of 100 plates (including this one) contained in the work Pittoresk Resetour fran Stockholm till Neapel printed in Stockholm and Paris in 1852, which represents the iconographic account of the journey from Stockholm to Naples and its surroundings. The book illustrates the journey from Sweden to Italy, through Denmark, Holland, France, Switzerland, Tyrol, and Savoy with magnificent lithographs printed on a sepia background and retouched in white by Billmark.
Tinted lithograph in excellent condition.
