Description

Mary Magdalene in the wilderness; St Mary Magdalene seated on a mat of rushes on a rock, praying and contemplating a crucifix tied to a tree stump to left, with an open book and jar of ointment on the ground to right, and with trees and foliage behind.

Etching and engraving, without publishing details.

Counterpart copy of only the upper part of Annibale Carracci's work published in 1591. As Bohlin notes it is an “inverted etching of the upper half. Instead of leaning on the blanket, Magdalene leans on an ointment jar and a skull”.

A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the platemark, in good condition.
