Description
Virgin and Child enthroned, between St Catherine and St Francis; the Virgin sitting on a decorated throne and holding Christ Child on her lap, flanked on the left by Saint Catherine carrying a wheel and a palm, and on the right by Saint Francis holding a book and a cross; a 19thC re-strike.
Engraving, circa 1490, without signature and printing details.
Catalogued by Hind among a group of miscellaneous north Italian prints from about 1460-1500, is a modern one, deriving from a worn plate. Characterised by a double border and horizontal striations on the ground, it seems a product of the late fifteenth-century Milanese school.
“Probably Milanese, about 1490. In the same style of The Annunciation and The Virgin, Child and St. John (Hind nn. 68-69). The only impresions known are modern and from a much worn plate” (A. M. Hind in Early Italian Engravings, p. 271).
Other impressions (all modern) are in London, British Museum, Berlin; Florence (Galleria degli Uffizi), Milan (Castello Sforzesco), in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts; Zürich.
A good impression on 19th century paper, with margins, perfect condition. Rare.
