Description
Engraving,1570 circa, unlettered. First or second state, of three, before lettering. After Perino del Vaga’ subject
Good example, printed on contemporary watermarked laid paper, with margins, in very good condition.
The print belongs to a series of four.
Bartsch listed the series (Bartsch XV.397.30 to XV.398.33) as Giorgio Ghisi's work and described a second state of each, retouched by Ghisi, under the same catalogue numbers but on a different page. The style of these four prints and the fact that none of them is signed suggest that they were not made by Ghisi himself, but rather by an engraver who was closely familiar with Ghisi's work.
A drawing related to the series by Perino del Vaga reproduced in these prints is in the Albertina (n. 2766).
