Description
Etching, 1650 – 1655 circa, inscribed at lower left “PTesta delin Cesar sculp Rome”.
Good proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, with illegible watermark, central fold, otherwise very good condition.
The print translate, in reservse, a drawing by Pietro – Study of Justice and Charity – now at Albertina.
This drawing belons to a group of four studies for pendentives that has been associated with Testa’s frescos in the Saint Lambert chapel in Santa Maria dell’Anima, a Roma.
This work is included in the “Raccolta di diversi disegni e pensieri di Pietro Testa ritrovati doppo la sua morte”, published by F. Collignon after Testa’s death, and etched by Giovanni Cesare Testa, fl. 1630 – 1655, the nephew and supposed pupil of Pietro Testa.

Giovanni Cesare TESTA (Roma circa 1630 – circa 1655)
Nephew of Pietro Testa. He devoted himself to the art of etching. After the death of his uncle, probably to commercially exploit the market demand for his works, he worked after his drawings, with the assistance of Francois Collignon.
