Description

Engraving, signed and dated at bottom center 'CHERVBINVS ALBERTVS. FE. ROMÆ / 1582'; lettered at bottom center 'ILLVSTRISS. PRINCIPI LAVRENTIO CARDINALI MAGALOTTO. / Haeredes Cherubini Alberti dant, donat et dicant. Romæ cum Priuilegio Summi Pontificis.'

Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, occasional foxing, minimal scratches, otherwise in very good condition.

The composition is after the frescoes executed circa 1537-1538 by Cristofano Gherardi (San Sepolcro 1508 - 1556) called Il Doceno, in one of the pendentives in the so-called Prometheus Room in the Castello Bufalini at S. Giustino.

The engraving is published by Bartsch as by Cherubino after Michelangelo (see Bartsch XVII.80.92).

The dedication is to Cardinal Lorenzo Magalotti, who was the brother-in-law of Urban VIII’s younger brother Antonio Barberini. Lorenzo Magalotti was created cardinal on 7 October 1624, so this date is the “terminus post quem” for this publication by Heirs’s Cherubino Alberti, that was edited after 7 october 1624.

The only copies known bear the inscription in lower margin, so a first state before inscription is presumed.

Related studies after the frescoes are in the Magherini Graziani Album in the Uffizi, Florence.
