Description
Engraving, 1570, signed in the plate in the bottom right corner.
Magnificent proof, rich tones, printed on laid paper, trimmed to the copperpalte, in excellent condition.
The work reproduces the preserved frescoes in Parma in the Chiesa Magistrale of Santa Maria della Steccata. The nickname "Steccata" derives from a particular moment in its long history, or since in the course of the fourteenth century the image of Maria lactans (Madonna nursing), painted on the wall of the oratory dedicated to St. John the Baptist, was surrounded by a "batten" with the aim of protecting it.
That same image now dominates the altar of the church which, over the centuries, has undergone several transformations that led to assume the existing plant of a Greek cross.
There is little information on this painter, engraver, goldsmith and editor, probably Venetian. It is known that its business is conducted between Padua and Venice, where in 1566 obtained the privilege for his work as a publisher, lasting fifteen, by the Senate of Venice. A close collaborator of Francesco Camocio and Bertelli, he devoted himself successfully to the production of valuable maps, and founded a printing house that became very important to the city.
Works not described by the repertoires and rare.
Domenico ZENOI (Attivo tra il 1559 e il 1574)
Engraver, goldsmith and publisher. Active in Venice and Padua. Fifteen-year privilege granted by the Senate, 5 december 1566 for devotional prints, portraits and maps that he intended to publish. A license was issued to Zenoi on the same day by chiefs of the Council of X. A month later, 11 January 1567, a second license with stipulation that Zenoi required to show each print to the Esecutori contro la bestemmia so that they could check there was no obscenity. 9 september 1568 fined, with Camocio, by the Esecutori for obscene prints and sonnets found in Camocio's shop. His plates were published by, among others, Donato e Ferrando Bertelli, Bolognino Zaltieri, Pierre de Huchin.
