Description

Etching, not dated, lettered at bottom 'Gasparo dalolio exc P Fari I'. Example in its final state, in which the corners have been rounded losing lettering.

A good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to platemark, in good condition.

The scene, after a lost drawing by Paolo Farinati, shows the Virgin and Christ Child who sits on her knee taking fruit held in a cloth by the young John the Baptist, at bottom right is a lamb.

Albricci supposed that the plate had four states, and this is the fourth state (second of two according Bartsch) impression printed from the octogonal plate.

Albricci supposed that Paolo Farinati may have seen Giulio Romano's paintings representing the Virgin (Holy Family in Madrid, Prado, and Madonna della Gatta, Museo di Capodimonte, Naples), because of the Roman influences in this print.

Orazio FARINATI (Verona 1558/1561 - dopo il 1616)

was a late Mannerist Italian painter. Farinati was born in Verona. He was the principal assistant to his father, the painter Paolo Farinati, and worked in Paolo's studio until 1606. His style owes much to that of his father and sometimes even directly copies it.
