Description
Pair of rare engravings designed, engraved and published by Sebastiano Lovison.
The two plates belong to a series of 4 works on the city of Bassano.
In 1826 the engraver Sebastiano Lovison engrave some views of Bassano, beginning his undertaking by portraying - as he himself wrote - the “majestic Bridge, new and imposing work of the famous engineer Casarotti”.
Thus were born the famous and fortunate four prints: “two of which represent the interior and exterior of the bridge, and two others the pleasant surroundings”.
They document the Bridge recently rebuilt, after having been destroyed on November 2, 1813 by the French to prevent the Austrian troops from pursuing them. In the sheet, circulated by Lovison to invite interested parties to book the views, one reads: “Bassano, for its pleasant position and for the vagueness and amenity of its delightful views, is an object of admiration to the eye of the Forestiere.” (cf. Giambattista VincoDaSesso, Bassano del Grappa nelle stampe d'arte.)
Etching, with margins, small oxidation, otherwise in excellent condition.
Dimensions: 430x330 mm each one.
