Description
Gouache on paper depicting the Gulf of Baia, datable to the period 1830/40.
Baia (ancient Baiae) is a part of Bacoli, province of Naples, in the Phlegraean Fields area.
Its gulf, enclosed between the hills of Punta Lanterna in the south (where the Aragonese Castle is located) and Punta Epitaffio in the north, is nothing more than an ancient volcanic crater, dating back about 8,400 years ago and only half preserved, being its eastern part sunk or completely eroded by the sea.
Excellent condition.
