Description

Rare map of the city, oriented with the north to the right, engraved by Nicolas Beatrizet for the publisher Antonio Lafreri. Exemple in the first state of three, before the imprint of Pietro de Nobili.

The work is known among scholars as the "map of the war of Naples" for the prominence given to the new fortifications wanted by Pope Paul IV to defend the city from the threat of Spanish troops, who had crossed the southern border of the Papal States. The new city walls were built, between 1556 and 1557, under the direction of Camillo Orsini.

In the scroll at the bottom right, the title: RECENS RURSUS POST OMNES OMNIUM DESCRIPTION. URB. ROMAE TOPOGRAPHIA. CUM VALLIS. FOSSIS AGGERIBUS CAETERISQ[UAE] QUAE AD NOSTIUM IMPEDIEND. IRRUPTION. PER UNIVERSUM URB. AMBITUM INTRA EXTRAQ[UE] MOEN PUBLIC. IMPEN. PROUD CURAVIT PAUL IIII. PONT. MAX. DUM BELLO PARTHENOP. PREMERETUR. FORMIS ANTON. LAFRERII SEQUAN. DILIGENTISS. EXPRESS. AN. M.D.LVII CON GRA[TIA] ET PRIVILEGIO. In the lower left corner, engraved on a small stone, we find the initials .NB. that identify in Nicolas Beatrizet (Beatricetto) the engraver of the plate.

The map is contained both in the "Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae" by Lafreri and in composite cartographic collections of the XVI century. It can be identified with the work described in the catalog of the Lafreri typography (n. 123) and in that of Stefano Duchetti of 1581 (n. 97) as "Roma con li forti". It is then inserted in the catalog of Paolo Graziani (inv. 1583, n. 77) and in that of Pietro de Nobili (inv. 1585, n. 8) as "La Citta de Roma con la fortezza".

An exemple of de Nobili's print was presented in the Reiss & Sohn auction catalog of April 26, 2002. A third issue of the plate bears the editorial address of Angiola Marcucci; in the frame there is a copper scraping in correspondence of Pietro de Nobili's signature.

Engraving, a magnificent proof printed on contemporary paper with watermark "lozenge with six-pointed star in a circle" (Woodward nn. 289-296), trimmed the copperplate, in perfect condition.
