Taken from "Introductionis in Universam Geographiam," published in London in 1711.
The author, Philipp Cluver (1580-1622), of a noble and ancient German family, is numbered among the famous geographers.
His "Introduction to General Geography", which constitutes the first attempt at a systematic treatise on historical and political geography, was first published in Leiden in 1624, by the famous Elzeviri publishers.
The work is subsequently reprinted in several editions and languages throughout the seventeenth century and at the beginning of the next, containing an ever-increasing number of maps.
Copperplate with fine later hand colour, in very good conditions.

Cluver was born in in Danzig and after studying in Leyden and Oxford, he took interest in historical geography; his subsequent publications made a wide and influential contribution to the knowledge of the subject .
