Printed in Rome in 1646 for the botanical treatise by Giovanni Battista Ferrari (1584 - 1655) Hesperides, sive, de malorum aureorum cultura etusa libri quatuor, one of the most important and scientifically precise works of 17th-century Italian workmanship, where the author classifies and analyzes citrus fruits, describing their histories, origins, provenances and methods of cultivation.
Giovanni Battista FERRARI (Siena, 1584 circa – Siena, 1º febbraio 1655)
as an Italian Jesuit scholar with a keen interest in taxonomy and classification of fruit. A native of Sienna, he removed to Rome where he was appointed chair of Hebraic studies at the Collegio Romano, a position he held for 28 years allowing him to give full reign to his thoughts and studies as a man of letters.
