Description

From "Atlante dell'America contenente le Migliori carte geografiche…". After Nicolas Bellin. Engraved by Vanni.

Copperplate, showing the usual folds, wide margins, two small warm holes, generally in very good condition. Rare.

The map covers the port and city of Havana Cuba from the Havana Bay to Guanabacoa. The map is exceptionally detailed, noting forts, rivers, canals, roads, depth soundings and other topographical features.

The map identifies Forte Moro (Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro) and Puntale (Castillo de San Salvador de la Punta), the two fortresses defending the entrance channel. The map also lists other important fortifications and barricades along the right border.

Marco COLTELLINI (Livorno1719 - Pietroburgo 1777)

Well known poet and librettist, in 1762 bought the most important printing of Leghorn, that of Giovan Paolo Fantechi at '"Insegna della vertità", the direction of which was entrusted to Giuseppe Aubert. One of the first published editions, was, in 1763, "Il Gazzettiere americano, contenente un distinto ragguaglio di tutte le parti del Nuovo Mondo…" which got a great sales success. The atlas, in 3 volumes, with texts written by Giuseppe Pazzi, is the first Italian translation, enriched with notes and cards of "The American Gazetteer" published the year before in London by Millar & Tonson. The maps accompanying the atlas are derived from the French cartographer Jacques Nicolas Bellin, used for both the "Petit Atlas Maritime" and for "Histoire Generales de Voyages", with respect to which, however, are embellished with decorative cartouches and finely engraved. The works bear the signatures of Veremondo Rossi, Andrea Scacciati, Giuseppe Maria Terreni and also Violante Vanni, a rare case of Italian women's engagement in the cartographic field.
