Description
Map from "Il Gazzettiere Americano", including maps after Nicolas Bellin.
The atlas, in 3 volumes, with texts written by Giuseppe Pazzi, is the first Italian translation, enriched with notes and maps of "The American Gazetteer" published the year before in London by Millar & Tonson. The maps accompanying the atlas are derived from the French cartographer Jacques Nicolas Bellin, used for both the "Petit Atlas Maritime" and for "Histoire Generales de Voyages", with respect to which, however, are embellished with decorative cartouches and finely engraved. The works bear the signatures of Veremondo Rossi, Andrea Scacciati, Giuseppe Maria Terreni and also Violante Vanni, a rare case of Italian women's engagement in the cartographic field.
Copperplate, showing the usual folds, wide margins, two small warm holes, generally in very good condition. Rare.
Marco COLTELLINI (Livorno1719 - Pietroburgo 1777)
Well known poet and librettist, in 1762 bought the most important printing of Leghorn, that of Giovan Paolo Fantechi at '"Insegna della vertità", the direction of which was entrusted to Giuseppe Aubert. One of the first published editions, was, in 1763, "Il Gazzettiere americano, contenente un distinto ragguaglio di tutte le parti del Nuovo Mondo…" which got a great sales success.
