Description
Map of Hispaniola engraved by Giuseppe Maria Terreni published into Il Gazzettiere Americano, edited in 3 volumes by Marco Coltellini, Livorno, 1763.
The map covers the region from the Delaware River and New Jersey in the South to Maine and west to the Susquehanna River. The map shows towns, roads, villages, churches, meeting houses, rivers, mountains, inlets, islands and a host of other details.
The atlas, in 3 volumes, with texts written by Giuseppe Pazzi, is the first Italian translation, enriched with notes and cards of "The American Gazetteer" published the year before in London by Millar & Tonson. The maps accompanying the atlas are derived from the French cartographer Jacques Nicolas Bellin, used for both the "Petit Atlas Maritime" and for "Histoire Generales de Voyages", with respect to which, however, are embellished with decorative cartouches and finely engraved. The works bear the signatures of Veremondo Rossi, Andrea Scacciati, Giuseppe Maria Terreni and also Violante Vanni, a rare case of Italian women's engagement in the cartographic field.
Copper etching, in very good condition.
Marco COLTELLINI (Livorno1719 - Pietroburgo 1777)
Well known poet and librettist, in 1762 bought the most important printing of Leghorn, that of Giovan Paolo Fantechi at '"Insegna della vertità", the direction of which was entrusted to Giuseppe Aubert. One of the first published editions, was, in 1763, "Il Gazzettiere americano, contenente un distinto ragguaglio di tutte le parti del Nuovo Mondo…" which got a great sales success.
