Description
Uncommon map prepared by Francesco Costantino Marmocchi to illustrate his Geografia Commerciale. The Atlas was called Il Globo Atlante di carte Geografiche compilate da F.C. Marmocchi per servire di corredo al suo corso di geografia commerciale, printed in Genova by Paolo Rivara, 1858. It is illustrated with the maps engraved by Giuseppe Cattaneo, Carlo Poggiali, Giulio Bonatti and Cesare Magrini.
Marmocchi (Poggibonsi, 1805 - Geneva, 1858) was a well-known geographer and cartographer. In relations with Mazzini, he was involved in the political uprisings of 1831 and suffered harsh persecution that went as far as imprisonment by the Grand Ducal government. Elected in 1848 deputy to the Tuscan Parliament, he was appointed by grand-ducal decree Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior then held by Guerrazzi. Then emigrated to Rome, and even after in Corsica, which searched at length with Gregorovius, then settled in Turin and, finally, in Genoa, where he remained for the rest of his life attending mainly to geographical compilations.
