Description
Very rare panorama of Rome taken from the Campidoglio tower, drawn from life by Auguste-André Bovet and lithographed by Gabriel Charton, published in Geneva where both artists lived and were originally from.
Charton (Geneva 1755 - 1853) was a painter, lithographer and etcher on tin. He is considered and is regarded as the introducer of lithography in Geneva, which he would practice from 1817; he decided to abandon his establishment in 1840.
Bovet (Geneva 1899-1864) was an engraver and medallist who was trained in Italy, where he made a trip in his youth. A series of landscape views, made between 1815 and 1818, are known of him (see Benezit, Dictionnaire, vol. II. P. 86). He was one of the first artists to introduce lithography in Geneva.
Lithograph, circa 1820, signed at bottom. Printed on coeval paper, in excellent condition.
