Description
Map of Ancient Rome taken from the rare French guide Les curiositez de l'une et de l'autre Rome, ou: Traité des plus augustes temples et autres principaux lieux saints de Rome chrestienne by Nicolas de Bralion, printed in Paris in 1655.
The map is derived from that of Giacomo Lauro included in the Antiqua Urbis Splendor of 1612/5. In the lower right-hand corner is, however, added the Forma Urbis con Montibus the famous “Forma Urbis Severiana”, the map of Rome engraved on marble slabs made between 203 and 211, at the time of Septimius Severus, and placed in one of the halls of the Temple of Peace.
Nicolas de Bralion (1600–1672) was a French oratorian and ecclesiastical writer who was influential on bringing various Italian ideas into France. De Bralion joined the Paris Oratory in 1619 and published a number of historical and religious books.
Rare archaeological plan, not described in Roma Antica by A. Caldana.
