Description

Depicts the Danish defenses at Nyborg against the Swedish invasion of November 1659. The large title cartouche incorporates a key to the location of the various forces.

Plate taken from Histoire du Règne de Charles-Gustave, Roy De Suède, Comprise en sept commentaires [...] traduite rn François sur le Latin de Monsieur le Baron Samuel De Pufendorf... Imprime à Nuremberg: Aux Frais De Chrisophle Riegel, 1697.

Pufendorf's magisterial history of the reign of King Carl Gustav (ruled 1654-1660), written while he was historiographer royal, was first published in Latin in 1696.

Most of Carl Gustav's reign involved the Second Northern War in Poland-Lithuania, which forms the bulk of Pufendorf's narrative, together with the numerous plates, town views and maps of the territory under question. Towards the end is a very long folding plate depicting Carl Gustav's funeral procession in Stockholm.

Copperplate, good condition.
