Nicolas SANSON & Alexis Hubert JAILLOT
Geographer to the King of France, a native of Abbeville, may be regarded as the founder of the French school of cartography. He was a prolific cartographer, producing more than three hundred maps during his career, which began with a meeting with the publisher Melchior Tavernierand later continued successfully in accordance with the famous publisher Pierre Mariette . At his death, the activity map was continued by his sons, in particular by Guillaume Sanson (Paris 1633-1703). These, in argument with Mariette, he joined brother Alexis Hubert Jaillot. Their union led to the reprinting of many cards produced by Nicolas Sanson, some of which were updated and enlarged.
