Description

Engraving, 1605 circa, signed in plate, lower right of image: “CV Sichem Sculp: et excud:”. Based on a work of Jan Cornelisz Woudanus after a sketch of Aldegrever. 

From Historische beschrijvinge ende affbeeldinge der voorneemste hooft ketteren, so vande catholijcke, ende christelijcke kercke[…], published in Amsterdam in 1608 by C. van Sichem.

Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, with unidentified watermark, very good condition. 

Portrait of the Anabaptist Bernhard Knipperdolling, leader of the Münster Anabaptists; showing a half-length portrait of Kipperdolling turnerd to the left, holding a glove in his left hand, on the top left an emblem with a hand holding a sword surrounded with a laurel wreath. 

According to Hollstein, the plate was published with Dutch and German text, in ornamental border, used in editions 1608; without text and ornamental border in 1677 edition.

Christoffel van Sichem, called "de Oude" (1546-1624), of Amsterdam , who lived at Basel , Switzerland, for a few years, published at Amsterdam in 1606 a number of loose sheets, most of them drawn and engraved by himself, on which were pictured a number of " Anabaptists " such as Jan van Leyden , David Joris , and Bernt Knipperdolling . In 1608 these pictures, augmented with some new ones, were published in book form, entitled "Historische Beschreibüng unnd abbildünge der fürnembste Haupt-Ketzer so…"
