Ivan KUPCIK (1 aprile 1943, Pardubice)

Ivan Kupčík, historical cartographer specializing in the history of cartography in the Czech lands and Central European region was born on April 1st, 1943 in Pardubice. He studied at the Charles University Faculty of Science at the Department of Cartography and Physical Geography, graduating in 1972 after defending his thesis Česká a slovenská úřední kartografie 1914-1945. He then expanded the topic a year later defending it as a doctoral dissertation. He worked at the Cartography Department of the ČSAV Geographic Institute and in the department of historical geography of the ČSAV Institute of Czechoslovak and World History. From 1971-1978 Dr. Kupčík was the curator of the State Map Collection. He then emigrated to Germany. Beginning in 1980, he worked at the Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv in Munich. From 1993-2006 he lectured historical cartography at the Faculty of History and History of Art of the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich.
