Description
Born in Venice in 1722 and died in Poland at the age of 68, Bellotto spent his life wandering around the courts of Europe. But decisive in his art was his experience in the workshop of his maternal uncle, Antonio Canal, who achieved his eternal fame as a painter under the nickname Canaletto. Precisely thanks to the 'recommendation' implicit in his kinship, the younger painter managed to be treated with respect by all the reigning dynasties, even if he later acquired, on an artistic level, a maturity independent of the good offices of his illustrious relative. The exhibition and catalogue retrace, through fifty-two works from all over the continent, his nomadic life, and his career as a vedutista: from Italian cities to northern ones such as Dresden and Warsaw. In his paintings, according to the opinion of leading critics, the artist truly immortalises the 'soul' of places: busy streets and squares, palaces and churches under construction, so much so that his views were used as a model in the reconstruction of Warsaw after World War II.
