Description

Map taken from the Géographie universelle. Atlas-Migeon (Revu par Vuillemin) historique, scientifique, industriel et commercial à l'usage des Lycées. des Seminaires et des Familles comprenant la Géographie, L'Histoire, la Statistique, etc, Paris, J. Migeon 1872.

This French atlas is one of the most decorative atlases of the late 19th century. In addition to being hand colored, the majority of the maps feature one or more superb vignettes showcasing key cities or monuments from the region. The atlas contains 43 maps (41 of which are double-page), including one celestial chart, six historical maps, and 37 modern maps.

It is called Atlas Migeon because of the name of its publisher, but the author of the majority of the maps was Louis Edouard Desbuissons (1827-1908), a prolific mapmaker who worked in Paris for many decades in the Ministère des Affaires Etrangères.

Etching with original hand colour, very good condition.
