Description

Charte De La Suisse, De La Rhetie, ou Des Grisons, De La Valtelin, Du Valay, & autres Seigneuries Visines Exactement dressee sur les Lieux par Gaspr Baudouin Ingenieur Militaire & Capitaine de l'artillerie du Roy . . . en L'Estat de Millan.

Rare map of Switzerland and part of Italy by Melchior Tavernier. The map is based on Gaspard Baudouin's surveys of the region of Switzerland and northern Italy that was the scene of military action during the reign of Louis XIII.

The map extends south to Milan and Crema and north to Basel; it is one of the two earliest known maps engraved by Melchior Tavernier and includes his editorial imprint "A Paris chez Melchior Tavernier demeurant sur l'Isle du Palais sur le quay qui Regard la Megiserie". Most of Tavernier's original maps were made on "seat of war" territories and illustrated military movements during the reign of Louis XIII. Fordham claims that this map of Switzerland and the Carte et Description Generale de la Valtoline, are the two earliest maps printed by Tavernier.

Melchior Tavernier was engraver and printer to the King of France and also distributor in France of the cartographic works of Hondius, Jansson and Blaeu. Tavernier was part of a large family engaged in the publishing trade in Paris in the early 17th century. Early in his career, he seems to have collaborated with Henricus Hondius, since at least one of his early maps refers to Tavernier as a seller of a map engraved in Amsterdam, by Hondius. He is probably best known for publishing a map of the postal roads of France, which was copied several times until the end of the century. He also published an atlas with the same title as J. le Clerc's Theatre Geographique, using many of Le Clerc's maps but incorporating others from different sources. He published composite atlases and work for other cartographers, including Nicolas Sanson, Nicola Tassin and Petrus Bertius. His work passed to Pierre Mariette, who in turn became associated with Sanson. Not to be confused with his grandson of the same name (1594-1665), who engraved maps for Sanson.

Etching, finely hand-colored, in excellent condition. Very rare work.
