Description

Map of the territory of Verona taken from the work Antiquitatum Veronensium Libri VIII. Nunc primum in lucem editi variisque iconibus et antiquis inscriptionibus locupletati by Onofrio Panvinio, printed in Padua by Paolo Frambotti in 1648. The map is oriented with North on the left and bears on the right a cartouche and compass with the scale of Italian miles. On the upper left is a portrait of Veronese historian Torello Saraina within a large, handsome cartouche adorned with two cornucopias overflowing with fruit, symbols of prosperity.

The Antiquitatum Veronensium libri VIII, undoubtedly the most significant printed work relating to the city of Verona, is full of multiple engravings to illustrate a text, which traces the history of the city by outlining the biography of the illustrious Veronese and describing its ancient monuments with the help of a rich iconographic apparatus.

The map of the Veronese territory is unsigned, but it is well known that the artists who collaborated with Frambotti in the creation of the iconographic apparatus were François Huret and Giovanni Georgi [Đurđević], active in Padua between 1617 and 1656, who signed other plates.

Onofrio Panvinio (Verona 1530 - Palermo 1568) was a learned Augustinian father. He moved to Rome at a very young age and devoted himself to studies and surveys of Roman antiquities, gaining great fame. Pius IV appointed him reviser to the Vatican Library. Among his many works, especially notable are Commentarii ai Fasti (1558), Commentarii ai Trionfi, Comizi imperiali, Antichità veronesi (unfinished), a sylloge of epigraphs, etc. His manuscript records, valuable sources on medieval Roman monuments and remarkable evidence of his critical method, are preserved in the Vatican Library. He was portrayed by Titian (Rome, Colonna Gallery). In 1556 he produced the archaeological map of ancient Rome. At that same time he began collaborating with French engraver Étienne Dupérac, who went on to provide illustrations for posthumous prints of Panvinio's works.

Etching, finely hand-colored, in excellent condition.
