Description
Pair of engravings depicting the two hemispheres, made in 1810 by Marco di Pietro according to geographical information provided by the maps of Pierre Lapie (Paris 1779-1850).
The maps were prepared on behalf of the Gabinetto Letterario (Literary Cabinet) and then published in the nell’Atlante Universale e Portatile di Geografia Antica e Moderna. Napoli: presso il Gabinetto Letterario printed in 1813. The work contains 32 maps partly engraved by Marco di Pietro in Naples at Giustino Merolla, partly by Gennaro Bartoli.
“(cfr. V. Valerio in Società Uoini e Istituzioni Cartografiche nel Mezzogiorno d’Italia, p. 521).
Marco di Pietro (Rome, August 2, 1757 - Naples, August 21, 1840) began his work as an engraver in Rome, publishing in 1807 some plates for Carlo Antonio Barbiellini's Atlante della geografia antica e moderna. Later he moved to Naples working on the atlas of the kingdom of Naples ordered from Rizzi Zannoni by Giuseppe Bonaparte. In 1807 he joined the Topographical Office where he worked until 1836. Stricken by cholera, he was allowed to retire to private life in 1837.
Etching with contemporary coloring of outlines, light oxidation, otherwise in very good condition. Very rare.
