Description
Soft ground etching, 1852, lettered below image with production detail: 'Decamps -Alp. Masson / (Tiré de la Collection de Mr P. Perier)', title above the image. After a painting by Alexandre Gabriel Decamps, dated 1843. Very good condition.
Plate originally published in 'Dix eaux fortes d'après Decamps', engraved by Masson and Marvy after Alexandre Gabriel Decamps (1803 – 1860). The plates were executed after paintings or drawings from the collection of Paul Périer they all represent landscapes, some of which incorporating subjects taken from Jean de La Fontaine's Fables.
Alphonse Masson (1810/1814? – 1898) etcher and painter; 1814 according to Thieme Becker. Student of Decamps and Ingres; collaborated to 'L'Artiste'.
