Description
The beast with the lamb's horns and the beast with seven heads; with Christ crowned above holding a sickle; German text in letterpress on the verso.
Woodcut, 1502, signed in the block with Greff's monogram, 'IVF'.
After the woodcut by Albrecht Dürer, from the set of “Apocalyse”, first published in 1498 with German text.
Hieronymus Greff (Hieronymus von Frankfurt). Painter, born c.1460, died after 1525, according to Saur (older authorities give dates as fl. 1502-36). Presumably a son of the artist Hans Greff, lived in Strasbourg from 1501. He was a member of the city council in 1503/1504, 1507, 1511/1512. According to city documents, he is known to have purchased a house in 1520. In 1502, he copied and printed 15 prints of A. Dürer's “Apocalyse” with his own monogram. In 1505, Greff received a commission from the prior of the Dominican monastery to execute an altarpiece. In 1525 he became the owner of an estate; the legal dispute over its ownership had been going on since 1509. It was probably the inheritance from his grandfather, who worked in Strasbourg in 1399, 1409 and 1448.
A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the borderline, a light print crease in the middle, otherwise in very good condition.
Very rare.

Hieronymus GREFF ( c.1460 – c. 1525)
Possibly a son of the painter Hans Greff. Since 1501, he lived in Strasburg. In 1503–1504, 1507, 1511–1512 he was a member of the City Council. The documents testify that he bought a house in 1520. In 1502, he copied and printed 15 woodcuts of Dürer’s Apocalypse with his monogram. In 1505, Greff received an order from the prior of the Dominican monastery to paint an altar. In 1525 he received a heritage after a law suit that lasted since 1509. It could be the heritage of his grandfather who worked in Strasburg in 1399, 1409 and 1448.
