Description

From the very rare Vedute degli antichi vestigi di Roma...

Magnificent work, printed on contemporary laid paper with full margins, in perfect condition.

Giovannoli, engraver and miniaturist, realized this uncommon and extremely rare series of views of the city of Rome, printed in few examples, all of them with great differences, in the public collection. The complete series is made of 143 works, completed in the second, posthumous edition published in Rome in 1619, with the title of Roma Antica di Alo Giovanno da Civita Castellana. The views depict uncommon archaeological places and monuments, briving inspiration from Etienne Duperac (1575) and Aegidius Sadler (1610 circa). Completely new, on the other side is the perspective and the engraving technique, with a strong chiaroscuro realized with oblique lines, extremely original and fascinating. Very rare.

Aloisio GIOVANNOLI (Civita Castellana 1550 circa - Roma 1618)

Engraver and draftsman. He realized the work "Vedute degli antichi vestigi di Roma…divise in due parti", published for the first time in 1616, including 106 etchings. The complete series consists in 143 etchings, which appear in the second editions, posthumous published in Rome in 1619 under the title of Roma Antica di Alo Giovanno da Civita Castellana. The views depict unusual archaeological sites and monuments, probably based on the model of Duperac Etienne (1575) and Aegidius Sadeler (1610).
