This conclave print celebrates the ceremonies accompanying the death of Pope Innocent XII (Benedetto Odescalchi,1611-89, pope from 1676) and the ensuing conclave at which Alexander VIII (Pietro Vito Ottoboni , 1610-91). The conclave began on August 23 and the new pope was elected on October 6, 1689.
This conclave print celebrates the ceremonies accompanying the death of Pope Innocent XII (born Antonio Pignatelli di Spinazzola, 1615-100) and the ensuing conclave at which was elected Clement XI. The conclave began on November 9 and the new pope was elected on November 23, 1700.
The central portion of the engraving shows the ground plan of the Vatican where the conclave was held. Beneath these two angels are lifting a curtain showing a city view including St. Peter's and the Castel Sant'Angelo. At the base of the image is a list of names of the attending popes. A rectangular frame inset into the ground plan shows the funeral procession of the old pope (Innocent XII). Two borders on the left and right divided into small frames show scenes of the death of the old pope and the election of the new one (Clement XI)
Magnificent work printed on contemporary laid paper with margins, in excellent condition.
Printed by the typography of Domenico de Rossi, is ascribed by Simonetta Tozzi to Robert van Audenaerde.

Robert van AUDENAERDE (Gand 1663 - 1743)
Painter and engraver. He was first a scholar of Francis van Mierhop, but he afterwards studied under Hans van Cleef. When he was twenty-two years of age he went to Rome, where he became a disciple of Carlo Maratti. Under this master he became a good painter of historical subjects. The principal part of his prints are after the pictures of Carlo Maratti.
