Description
Etching and engraving, after 1630, signed at lower left.
After Jacques Callot.
The engraving refers to the celebrations for the Feast of St. Luke, October 18, in the village of Impruneta, which Callot had the opportunity to participate in 1619. On the vast esplanade in front of the Church of St. Maria of Impruneta, the fair was held to commemorate the discovery of a miraculous Madonna believed painted by Luke the Evangelist. Callot fits over 1.300 figures of men and animals, many very small, but all so clear and specific. Infinite is the variety of gestures, actions, trades, occupations and clothing represented.
The success achieved by this work was so important that, when he returned to Nancy, the author decided to embark once again on the important work giving birth to a second plate.
The Savery's fair at Impruneta, is a mirror image copy of the second version of Nancy.
Collector's mark at lower right corner.
