Published posthumously under the patronage of Cardinal Gianfrancesco Barbarigo (1661-1730), the main text was written by the Jesuit Father Francesco Saverio Valcabbi (1701-81), was edited in Padua - 1732, contains eighty plates and is dedicated to Barbarigo. The magnificent plates were engraved by the celebrated Belgian painter and engraver Robert van Audenaerde and are based on a series of historical medals commissioned by Barbarigo and executed by Johann Franz Neidinger.
Robert van AUDENAERDE (Gand 1663 - 1743)
Painter and engraver. He was first a scholar of Francis van Mierhop, but he afterwards studied under Hans van Cleef. When he was twenty-two years of age he went to Rome, where he became a disciple of Carlo Maratti. Under this master he became a good painter of historical subjects. The principal part of his prints are after the pictures of Carlo Maratti.
