Description

Portrait of William of Nassau, whole-length and slightly turned to right, standing in armour, holding a baton and his sword, a shield with coat of arms in lower right corner, a pedestal with a feathered helmet and gloves at left, cavalry storming a city in background.

Engraving, 1600 circa, numbered in top right corner: "Fol: 466". Signed in lower right corner of impression: "CVSichem sculp. et ex.". Titled in lower margin: "Gvilemvs D.G. Princ. Avraicæ Comes Nassaviæ Gvbernat Belgicæ".

The portrait is a copy with variations after Hendrik Goltzius.

First published in about 1600, upon Sichem's return to Basel, it belongs to a series of 13 portraits of famous captains. Later, it is used as an illustration to Emanuel van Meteren's 'Niederländische Historien oder Geschichten ...' (Antwerp, 1611)

A very good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the platemark, good condition.

Christoffel van Sichem, called "de Oude" (1546-1624), of Amsterdam , who lived at Basel , Switzerland, for a few years, published at Amsterdam in 1606 a number of loose sheets, most of them drawn and engraved by himself, on which were pictured a number of " Anabaptists " such as Jan van Leyden , David Joris , and Bernt Knipperdolling . In 1608 these pictures, augmented with some new ones, were published in book form, entitled "Historische Beschreibüng unnd abbildünge der fürnembste Haupt-Ketzer so…"
