Description
Etching, 1750 circa, signed on platea t lower right ‘Joan. Aug. Ratti Pictor Sanueasis inv. et fec.’
Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, below small spot in the white border, otherwise in good condition.
A very rare etching by the famous Italian painter Giovanni Augusto Ratti is a pair with another sheet showing Pulcinella, sad, who leaves the house with his family.
The theme of Pulcinella was represented by Ratti not only in these two recordings but also, as a ceramist, on majolica.
Giovanni Agostino Ratti, from Savona, came early to Rome, where he studied for several years in the studio of Benedetto Luti. Most of his 22 well-known etchings originated mainly in Rome, but the motifs of the Pulcinella did not arise until after his return to the homeland, where he pursued various orders between Savona and Genoa until his death.
