Description
Etching, 1730, inscribed in the banner ORDINE DELLA CAVALCATA PRESO IN S. GIO LATERANO DAL SOM.mo PON CLMENTI XII/ alli 19 9mbre 1730. Bottom centre: “si vendono da Luigi Neri in Piazza Navona / al insegna del Sansone”. Third state.
Below, 5 vignettes, flanked by two cartouche with relative A-D key .
Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the platemark, good ocndition.
The print depicts the procession for the Possession of Clement XII, born Lorenzo Corsini, which took place on 19 November 1730.
The plate was previously used for the possession of Innocent XIII, November 16, 1721, and for that of Benedict XIII of June 4, 1724, but is updated, as well as in the title - whit abrasions visible on the name of the Pope and the date - even in ephemeral adornments.
The ephemeral adornment for the taking possession of Clement XII were designed by the architect Pompeo Aldrovandini. The duke of Parma offered the traditional ephemeral arch in the Roman Forum, but no provisional architecture was erected in the Campidoglio, therefore, the triumphal arch depicted in the procession of 1721, designed at the time by Alessandro Specchi, is removed.
These details demonstrate the accuracy of this kind of prints.
The ephemeral arch in the Campidoglio of 1721 is well represented in a print of the same year engraved by Francesco Faraone Aquila (1676 - 1740), to which this engraving can also be ascribed.
A very rare work.
